Description
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide and mitochondria-targeted antioxidant belonging to the Szeto-Schiller peptide family. Consisting of 4 amino acids with alternating aromatic and basic residues, it selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane where it interacts with cardiolipin. Research has focused on its role in mitochondrial membrane stabilisation, reduction of reactive oxygen species, and preservation of ATP synthesis under conditions of oxidative stress. It is frequently studied alongside other mitochondrial peptides such as MOTS-c and Humanin in longevity and bioenergetics research. It is supplied in lyophilised form for research purposes.
